Gwendolyn Brown

"My artwork is heavily inspired by those around me. I particularly draw upon my relationships with family members and close friends, inspired by the way these connections continually shift and change throughout time. I am entranced by the way people interact with one another and the depth of the bonds we are able to form. In this Self Portrait, I reflected inwardly on my relationship with my identical twin sister. I wanted to convey the feeling of splitting apart and separation, yet still having a deeply solidified and rooted relationship. I also wanted to explore the idea of multiple selves and the way we contort our personalities to fit various roles in relationships.

I use various applications of oil paint to create the detailed, solid and transparent figures in Self Portrait."

Self-Portrait, oil on canvas, 2015, 36" x 48"
